I cannot accurately explain to you people how it feels to be a girl in a room full of dudes, talking about their male action heroes being the only intimidating action heroes out there.
My defense every single GAT DAMNED TIME was, "But what about Pam Grier?"
I loved Coffy, Foxy Brown, and then eventually Jackie Brown (if you haven't heard of these movies, here's what you do: First, smack yourself in the face and give yourself a "don't be a basic white girl" lecture. Second, watch these movies and understand that there weren't strong women of any color in bad ass roles like hers. Last, smack yourself again for being a basic white girl and promise yourself to never do it again).
I was NOT let down at all that Proud Mary is a draw on the Pam Grier classic style with an upgraded Taraji P. Henson kickass vibe.
We went from badass to kickass badass. I really don't even know if this review makes sense anymore!
Taraji P. Henson has been that girl that I just really wanna do shots of whiskey at a bar, late night, trading crazy ex-boyfriend/ex-girlfriend stories with. She just seems like a really cool chick that you can get along with.
Until you can't get along with her, and then she whoops your ass.
She's amazing as Cookie Lyon in Empire, but I'll always remember her in her breakout role as Shug in Hustle & Flow. The woman has talent and she has some damn range. And I enjoy watching her beat up dudes. I REALLY DO!
